It's likely Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will get the Patriot missiles he's seeking in an additional $6 billion aid package expected to be announced soon by the U.S. Zelenskyy says Kyiv urgently needs the Patriot missiles to create an air shield against further Russian missile attacks. Zelenskyy discussed the need for the Patriots on Friday with the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, a coalition of about 50 countries gathering virtually in a Pentagon-led meeting. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says the group since April 2022 has sourced millions of rounds of ammunition, rocket systems, armored vehicles and jets to help Ukraine rebuff Russia’s invasion. The Maine medical examiner's office says a body found alongside the Aroostook River this week was a man whose disappearance prompted multiple searches. The medical examiner said the cause of Erik Foote’s death was “pending” further tests. The disappearance of Foote drew additional attention with the arrest of a Washburn police officer, Chandler Cole, on March 29 for allegedly falsifying police records related to the case. Cole, who previously resigned, has declined comment. Foote was a U.S. Army veteran. He suffered from post traumatic stress disorder and moved to Washburn with his parents about a year and a half ago from Arizona. Washburn has a population of 1,500.

Also Friday, Kyiv security officials were assessing how they can recover lost battlefield momentum in the war. Russia, despite sustaining high losses, has been taking control of small settlements as part of its effort to drive deeper into eastern Ukraine. Two U.S. officials say Ukraine has sidelined U.S.-provided Abrams M1A1 battle tanks for now in its fight against Russia. This is in part because Russian drone warfare has made it too difficult for them to operate without detection or coming under attack. The sidelining of the Abrams reflects evolving battlefield tactics where drone use has made it virtually impossible for them to maneuver without detection. A $1 billion aid package announced this week includes munitions specifically able to take down drones and additional air defense systems. The U.S. agreed to send 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in January 2023 after an aggressive monthslong campaign by Kyiv.
