The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claim they have shot down an American drone over the country on the Arabian Peninsula. The U.S. military acknowledges reports but does not comment. If confirmed, it would be the second MQ-9 Reaper drone downed by the Houthis over the past week as they press their campaign over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis also have launched attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, demanding Israel ends its offensive in Gaza.

President Joe Biden, intent on selling his legislative accomplishments this election year, will travel to New Hampshire to detail the impact of a law that helps veterans get key benefits as a result of burn pit or other toxic exposure during their service. The reopening Monday of the Toussaint-Louverture airport in Port-au-Prince is expected to help ease a critical shortage of medications and other basic supplies. The country’s main seaport remains badly affected. Gangs control 80% of the capital. U.S.-based airlines are not expected to start using the airport until late May or early June. In recent weeks, U.S. military planes have landed with civilian contractors to help Haiti prepare for the arrival of foreign forces expected to help quell the violence.

He said, “We’re meeting in a moment of challenge.” He noted that Russia’s new onslaught on Kharkiv showed why the commitment was vital. Austin vowed to keep U.S. weapons moving “week after week.” However, those weapons have not fully reached the front lines and Ukrainians officials have said they are still struggling to fight back against a vastly more equipped Russian military.
